Searching (basic) in 2003

Google.com :- The crackers friend, your first choice for tools.
The art of effective web searching is a skill you will need to learn over time (I don't profess to be any good at it myself), and if you really wan't to delve into this subject check out +Fravia's new site. As the number of web pages increases exponentially, it becomes more and more difficult to find the 'gem' which you are looking for, especially since many search engines are now sponsored by big businesses 'sponsored links' and 'click through $ payments' are the coin of the realm in this world. Bear in mind also that whilst searching you have to be ruthless, it is very easy to get sidetracked into doing other things whilst trying.

AltaVista

Once upon a time regarded as the best friend of the reverse engineer but not any longer, these days I use Google. If you have to resort to AltaVista try using combinations of search parameters, such as '+softice +cracking +download +version 4.05' and filter out the scam sites with -warez and other inappropriate terms, such sites are probably smut/warez repositories anyway, be prepared to trawl through the various pages too since the first 20 or more tend to be of the 'sponsored link' variety, when evaluating results it is also very important to look at the last updated date reported by AltaVista, even if the jewel you are searching for appears to be listed on a sites description, look at this date closely, anything with 'last updated in 1997' has probably had the link long removed even if the page remains intact. If you find a site recently updated (and I mean probably no more than 2 weeks ago) then look also at the server address, 'here today, gone tomorrow' uploaders always use the free providers such as FortuneCity/GeoCities/Xoom and such, it can be quite a futile hunt ;-).
FTPSearch - Located in Norway (now owned by AllTheWeb), this FTP search engine can find many hidden directories. In the golden days trying appropriate filenames say 's-ice' & 'softice' could net you a few older copies from servers in the East, it may still have a use in locating older archives. AllTheWeb also has a web searching interface which seems to return very biased German results, like AltaVista expect to trawl through a few links to find what you need.

Netscape Search

This used to be a good resource back in 2000 however on running some new searches I've seen that the links are now sanitised by commercials and 'Editors Choice' sites, however there are some other notable search engines now available here, e.g. GoTo.com, which produces some fairly useful results (I have not hyperlinked the link since it will inevitably die or expire and my link checking program will have me fixing them again), the following search was conducted using +softice +download.

Unlike Google (see below) GoTo is not such a 'jewel', it requires careful filtering of the results, its links appear old as well, even servers in the East (.ru) are often missing files. Lyco's is also accessible here, it is one of the worst search engines for sanitised results, you may however be able to dig something during the process or get better results by specifying a full filename with extension e.g. softice.zip. Note that the warez releases of such tools, and one assumes most of you will want to retrieve the very latest version, usually have very specific filenames, you may need to source the precise name from one of the dupecheckers.

Nomen est Omen & Other Search Engines

Remember those relocators?, cjb.net/ml.org (now redundant) surf.to/tsx.org etc, prefix these with softice or softice4 and try them, you may be fortunate. Use also the various banner webrings you may see on various sites, check links, use cross links from visited links, you'll find within 4-5 clicks what you are looking for. You might even be able to persuade Yahoo to work for you by using its advanced search capabilities and selecting Web Site Matches, again look at the date of the hits closely before visiting.
Don't be afraid also to try any of the other search engines (there is tremendous concurrence on the web as these portals always advertise), try for instance Dogpile, HotBot, InfoSeek/Lyco's (one of the largest), Northern Lights, WebCrawler and probably 101 others.

DataRescue - You know, believe it or not ;-), the freeware version of IDA is still more than adequate to get you started in this game.
http://asm.deformed.us - Home of UnderNet #asm, at the moment (read that carefully) they have everything you might ever wan't in the latest versions, as this URL gets better known expect things to get trickier for the files to remain intact, but for now.....
ExeTools - Aaron's home page has everything you might ever need to download, however for most you need to be provided access to the FTP, at the time of checking ftp.txt was a 404, you might need some luck to get access. Since the host is in China, the links might survive for a while.
Links - Try combing/perusing sites I've linked too.
ProTools (Programmers Tools) - Once upon a time, a great tooling site, now more of a news archive of 'latest releases of various protectors' and unpackers, its still worth the visit and Kaparo keeps it very up-to-date, but don't expect to find IDA or SoftICE here.

So you’ve seen some of your friends using cool BBM symbols and you want to get them on your own device.

Well you’ve come to the right place!

Below you’ll find all the information you need to immediately add cool new BBM symbols to your Blackberry Messenger.

Basically when it comes to adding new symbols to either your BBM name or Blackberry Messenger chats, you’ve got two options:

Option 1: Free Copy and Paste Method

If all you want to do is add new BBM symbols to your Blackberry Messenger name, then the process is pretty simple. All you need to do is copy and paste.

However, if you’re looking to add a suite of new BBM symbols to your Blackberry Messenger symbol library, well things aren’t quite as simple, but still doable.

Both of methods below make use of the symbols I’ve included below these instructions. I’ve scoured the web and collected all the symbols I could find for you so you don’t have to go do it yourself.

Alright, let’s dive in.

How to add new BBM symbols to your Blackberry Messenger name

Copy the BBM symbols below
Paste them into an email and send it to your Blackberry
In your Blackberry, copy the symbols from the email
Paste the desired symbols into your BBM name

That’s it! You should now have a nifty new symbol in your BBM name.

How to add new symbols to Blackberry Messenger chat

While adding cool BBM symbols to your name is fun, it’s not as cool as adding new on-demand symbols to BBM chat.

Here you have two options.

The first option is to keep the symbols on your Blackberry as a text file and go to it every time you need to copy and paste a symbol for use in BBM chat. But let’s face it, that isn’t very practical and it’s a lot of work just to add a special character.

This second option is to add the symbols one at a time using AutoText. Unfortunately, this is not as easy and is quite time consuming depending on how many characters you want to add.

Also, some of the characters don’t render properly, and there’s no gaurantee that you’ll be able to use the character you’re after.

As stated above, this method relies on your Blackberry’s AuoText feature. Here are the instructions:

Copy the BBM symbols below
Paste them into an email and send it to your Blackberry
In your Blackberry, copy the desired symbol from the email
Navigate to your AutoText options ( Options → AutoText )
Press the menu button and select “New”
Set a ‘Replace’ phrase as the word you want to use to generate the symbol but make sure not to use “real” words.
Paste the symbol into the ‘With’ line and then save

For example lets say you wanted to create a new AutoText for the umbrella symbol below. In your Blackberry Options → Autotext you would type something like “brella” in the ‘Replace’ field and then paste the picture of the umbrella in the ‘With’ field and click save.

Now when you go to BBM and type “brella” and a space the symbol will display.

Repeat this process for each symbol.

How it works:

Using Fancy Characters is pretty simple. When you want to insert a symbol, press the ‘menu’ key and you’ll see a new option that says ‘Fancy Characters’. Selecting it will allow you to browse through the Fancy Character symbol library, which contains BBM symbols of all kinds, including flags for countries.

When you find the symbol you want, simply select it and it inserts. I really like the app because it’s fast, convenient and really easy to use. Plus you great looking symbols that most other people don’t have.

If there are any negatives about the app it’s that there are a few limitations for select users. If you’re a CDMA user you won’t be able to insert a symbol into SMS messages. But for every other function — email, BBM, status updates — you’re good to go. CDMA users also might not see all the symbols in the library. You can get access to more by installing East Asian Language and Input Support, which you can find in the Desktop Manager. Lastly, you’ll need BBM 5.0.0.57 or higher in order to see colored smileys.

For the more technically inclined, DIY type people, the free copy and paste method will work just fine for you.

" In China, a 2-year-old child wanders away from her mother and is hit by a car on a narrow, trafficked road. The driver is clearly aware of what he has done by the time he has run over her with the front wheels of his white van. Yet he continues forward, running over her prone body with his back wheels as well. And drives on. In the ensuing moments, several cars and pedestrians pass by, clearly notice her tiny, bleeding body in the street, and proceed on their way. Soon she is hit by a second vehicle. In the seven terrible and inhumane minutes that pass before someone pulls her body over to a pile of garbage and calls for help, 18 people pass her—scurrying on foot and by car, slowing down for a look and continuing on, one motorocyclist even circling the child's body without dismounting to help or even stopping.
The story of Yueyue, a horror show that transpired and continues to unfold in Foshan, Guandong province, has sparked outrage, soul-searching and despair across China since the story of the accident and the accompanying security camera video that shows her being struck down and ignored went viral.
Why, the Chinese ask themselves on blogs and Internet boards and on news shows, did this happen? How could this be? Yueyue lies in a coma and a doctor recently predicted that if she survived, she would likely be in a vegetative state for the rest of her life. Her mother is reported to sob by her bedside and call, "Yueyue, give your mother another chance to love you."
Why indeed. And how? We are moved by Yueyue's story, all of us. Who would not be devastated by witnessing a child left so callously, so incomprehensibly, for dead, by so many who could have helped before one finally did? But in the U.S., where we are in a dizzying economic decline and where we read predictions of China's rise daily, where men and women now travel to Beijing to search out deals that are not happening in the U.S. and we fret that we should learn Mandarin if we want to stay relevant and keep up with the tides of change, Yueyue is both an innocent child-victim, and a symbol of our rising anxiety about What's Next.
As the world hopes and prays for Yueyue, some "explanations" emerge. But they perplex as much as they clarify.
Classic bystander effect. Western psychologists asked to comment on the incident have largely portrayed it as a classic case of "bystander effect." Witnesses who could potentially help do not feel responsibility or take action, presuming that "someone else will step up" and "it's not my issue/problem." Like turtles, witnesses, potential heroes, retreat by pulling into their shells. Similarly, social psychologists tell us, in large groups such as gangs, the superego gets punted around and terrible acts may be committed because the mindset of each individual perpetrator is, "I didn't do it—we all did—so nobody did." In a front page piece about Yueyue, the New York Times gingerly suggested that some believe a certain brusqueness about the fate and misfortune of others, a certain indifference, to be a "Chinese characteristic." Perhaps, but the bystander effect is powerful—and it is a term that came about when an entire building of people wrote off the fate of Kitty Genovese as "someone else's business" in 1964, giving rise to the notion of "diffusion of responsibility" in social psychology.
Gwonxi. This term and concept are central in China but relatively new to the Westerners who do business with them. Gwonxi is something like a network of personal relationships and can roughly be translated to "old boy's network." However, the concept of gwonxi and of acting in the interest of one's own extended family and group of close peers is not limited to the business world. China is a huge place, with a population of over 1.3 billion. The concept of gwonxi is important for navigating such a world. But might it subtly or not-so-subtly affect the ability to feel compassion for all?
Yueyue is a girl. While it isn't clear whether bystanders were aware that the toddler they were choosing not to help was a girl, it is not unlikely they would be less apt to help a girl. In China there has been an historical preference for male children, virtually institutionalized by the one-child policy in 1979. Female infanticide, abandonment of baby girls and sex-selective-pregnancy-reduction (aborting female fetuses) are unsavory but acknowledged facts of life in China.
Compensation culture. According to The Shanghaiist, the driver of the first car to hit Yueyue placed a call to the toddler's father, telling him that he would not surrender but offering to pay him compensation for the accident. Reportedly, the driver said that he realized it would cost him more to stop and help the child he had nearly killed than drive on and risk apprehension and prosecution. His actions are hardly off the map. In China, good Samaritans have in recent years been heavily penalized. In 2006, a man stopped to help an elderly woman who had slipped--and was promptly sued for most of her medical are. The judge in the case ruled that only someone who had perpetrated an injury against someone else would then help that person. Come again? Helping is a sign of guilt? In January, according to the Washington Post, China Daily called for a law to protect good Samaritans from liability. Until then, many Chinese fear they will be penalized for lending a helping hand. It is not hard to see how this can affect one's reserves of altruism and compassion long-term. "Nobody else dared touch her," one woman who passed Yueyue by was quoted as saying. "How did I?"
Rampant materialism. Many Chinese bloggers and commentators worry that "hunger for things and wealth" has replaced moral codes and guidelines such as Confucianism in the transition from Maoism to today's "Socialist Market Economy with Chinese Characteristics." Numerous economic experts and social commentators within China have viewed Yueyue's tragedy through this lens, starting a national conversation, the topic of which seems to be turning from "why?" to "how can we change?"
Perhaps China will become, as many predict, The Global Superpower. Perhaps it will succumb to a real estate bubble. Its rise may be an inevitable, given. Or far from inevitable. Western commentators and analysts have been making predictions about China for years, and these predictions have reached a kind of frenzied din in the last months as the U.S. fails to resuscitate itself from a lingering recession. Until China sorts out its Yueyue problem—and its baby formula problem, and its poisoned dog food problem, and its lead paint on toys problem, and the rest--westerners will remain deeply uneasy about China's future, and ours."

18 Free Ways To Download Any Video off the Internet

It seems like everyone these days is downloading, watching, and sharing videos from video-sharing sites like YouTube, Google Video, MetaCafe, DailyMotion, Veoh, Break, and a ton of other similar sites. Whether you want to watch the video on your iPod while working out, insert it into a PowerPoint presentation to add some spice, or simply download a video before it’s removed, it’s quite essential to know how to download, convert, and play these videos.

There are basically two ways to download videos off the Internet and that’s how I’ll split up this post: either via a web app or via a desktop application. Personally, I like the web applications better simply because you don’t have to clutter up and slow down your computer with all kinds of software!

Free Web services for downloading videos from video-sharing sites

	ClipNabber allows you to download videos from YouTube, Metacafe, etc by simply copying and pasting the URL. You’ll then get a link whereby you can download the file to your computer, iPod, iPhone, or any other media player. You’ll need to have an FLV player for the YouTube videos. Quick and very easy to use!

	Zamzar is a free online file conversion web application that can not only convert videos off the Internet to AVI, MPEG, 3GP, MP4, MOV, etc, but also converts between audio, image, and document formats. Paste the URL into Step 1 and then convert the file to your favorite format.

	VideoDownloader is a FireFox extension, but also allows you to paste in any URL from many sites such as Blip.TV, iFilm, and even social networking sites like MySpace. You can also download a free FLV player from their site to play the videos.

	Vixy.net is another site that not only downloads online videos, but will also convert them AVI, MOV, MP4, 3GP, or MP3 (if you want to extract the audio from the file). Using this site, you don’t have to worry about downloading a FLV player as you can convert it to Windows format. (Same as Zamzar)

	KeepVid also supports just about any video sharing site out there and the only difference about this site is that it also has a Top Videos section, so you can quickly download the most watched videos around the web.

	Media Converter is similar to ZamZar and vixy.net, but requires you to create an account and log in. Also, it seems like it only supports downloading and converting videos from YouTube. You can also download their video download program, but it only supports 5 sites.

	Hey! Watch is an online video encoding web service that encodes video into different formats including HD very quickly. The graphical interface is very nice and there are lots of features and options, such as the ability to transfer any video from the web directly to an FTP server or to online storage.

	YoutubeX, as the name suggests, allows you to download videos from YouTube. Obviously, it only supports YouTube, but it has a couple of other features, such as the ability to play your video on the site and find popular videos quickly.

	VideoRonk searches across multiple video-sharing sites such as Google Video, YouTube, MetaCafe and DailyMotion to find the most popular videos on each of them. You can either watch them on VideoRonk or download them to your computer in FLV format.

	VidDownloader supports about 10 sites including the major ones and can download the videos in DivX AVI format. It’s very easy to use and can also extract only the audio from a video by choosing “Just Audio” on the download page. You don’t have to worry about having an FLV player since it converts the files to Windows format.

	According to their web site, they support more than 98 video sites including MySpace, CollegeHumor, iFilm, etc. You’ll have to rename the files you download from YouTube with the .FLV extension at the end.

	This site is a foreign site, but is easy to use and supports most of the major sites. You can also download a free FLV player off their site to play videos from YouTube.

	DownThisVideo has a nice tag cloud at the top that you can click on to find videos quickly. From what I could tell, this site is mostly used by Japanese because the popular videos are mostly Anime, etc. However, you can still use it to download any YouTube video.

Video Downloaders for your DeSktop

If you prefer to have a desktop application that can download videos for you, check out the following list:

1. Orbit Downloader – This is by far the best desktop application I have seen for downloading any type of social media off the Internet. It can download videos and music from MySpace, YouTube, Pandora, Rapidshare, and lots more. It has a great interface and carries a very small foot print.

2. VDownloader – A small little application that can download videos from many sites and converts them to AVI or MPG format.

3. VideoDownloader – A useful FireFox add-on that supports more than 60 video sharing sites. It can also download other objects on a web page, such as movies, MP3s, flash files, and Quicktime movies directly.

4. Ares Tube – Another popular video download application that is very small and very easy to use. You can download videos in batches by entering URLs into a queue and Ares Tube can convert them into different formats such as iPod, MP4, MPG, etc.

4. YouTubeGrabber – Not a very fancy program, it simply takes your URL and downloads the file. No conversion is done and you’ll need to install an FLV player to watch the videos.

5. KeepV – Downloads videos from YouTube, MySpace, and Google and converts them to either MOV, 3GP, AVI, iPod, or PSP format.

Hopefully, using one of the tools above, you can download the video you want! I’m sure the arsenal of web services and desktop apps will grow, so this list will be updated as needed.

I've tested it extensively, and so far works 100%. This is the build I'm using now for all my IExpress-based installers. Works also under Vista, 2008 + 7, if the fix was created under 9x/NTx [95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP or 2003].

The only catch with newer Vista, 2008 + 7 IEAK 7/8/9 is:
installers created under Vista/2008/7 do *not* work under older 9x/NTx [95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, 2003] OSes.
[I'm sure there is a way to bypass this limitation, eventually a little known compatibility mode, but I need to install Win7 to experiment further.]

This is (presumably) your first time using iexpress, we’ll select the first option and click Next.

The next screen will ask you the type of package you want it to create.
iExpress can create a package that runs a command after it unpacks all files to a temporary location, or only extract the files to a location that the user specifies. The first option is useful if you want to, for example, run a script to make changes to the registry before the user runs your program for the first time.
There is a third option to create compressed files only but that is only applicable if you’re distributing Active-X controls. iExpress displays a handy description below each option so you can read that if you’re still not sure which about which option to select.

The next step is to give a name to the package that you’ll create. Enter the name in the text box and move to the next screen.

This step will let you display a confirmation message to the user installing the application. If you want to display a message to your user asking for confirmation if he/she wants to go ahead with the installation, then type in a message in the text box provided and when you’re done click Next.

Now, you will be able to select a license agreement which the installer will ask the user to adhere to. If you have a license agreement for your application, then type it in a text file and provide that here or else select the “Do not display a license“� option and move on.

This is where you actually select the files that will be installed by the installer that you’re creating. You can select as many files as you want here. Add files to the list by clicking on the Add button.

Now, you can safely move forward a few steps and keep clicking on the next button till you come across the Package name and options screen. This is where you select a name for the actual EXE file that gets generated and decide whether you want to hide the extraction process from your users or let them see all the gory details. You can also generate a log files for the installation process.

In the next step you can choose to create what iExpress calls a Self Extraction Directive file. This is needed if you want to later change some of the options that you chose and create another modified installer. Since, we don’t want that right now, we’ll choose not to create an SED file.
That’s it. iExpress will now go ahead and create an EXE file for you. Wasn’t that easy?

Make XP Or Vista Look Like Windows 7

Like what you’ve seen of Windows 7, but can’t afford the upgrade anytime soon? It’s been said that most of the features of Vista and Windows 7 can be replicated on XP using only freely available software. While that statement is certainly debatable, one thing is for sure: you can easily replicate some of the obvious interface changes.
Lee-soft offers a variety of free programs aiming to make Vista or XP look like windows 7, perhaps the most useful of which provides XP and Vista users with 7′s famous new taskbar. Let’s check them all out.

ViGlance: Windows-7 Style Toolbar

If you’re not familiar with with the Windows 7 toolbar, it’s actually pretty cool. Like the old Windows toolbar, it sits comfortably between the Start menu and the system tray, showing you which windows are currently open. Like the Dock in OSX, it allows you to “pin” programs, meaning the programs you use most will remain on the toolbar whether the program is open or not. Finally, hovering over any open program’s icon will show you a thumbnail of what’s happening in the program right now, as well as a list of all open windows or tabs. Some media players even allow you to control playback from this thumbnail.
Microsoft claims this new toolbar comes with a huge productivity bonus, and it’s not hard to see why: it combines the strengths of Mac’s dock with the familiarity of Window’s old taskbar. It’s also a greatly improved way to launch and switch between programs than the taskbar introduced 15 years ago with Windows 95.

Sadly, it only comes by default with Windows 7. Download ViGlance, however, and you can have it right now from within Windows Vista and XP. Well, basically, anyway.

As you can see, ViGlance gives you the most important part of the Windows 7 toolbar: one pinnable icon for each program. ViGlance willl also give thumbnails of any open window when you hover over its icon. What ViGlance will not do, so far as I can tell, is allow you to control media players.
Go ahead and download ViGlance here. You don’t need to install the program to use it – just run the program and you’ll be able to try out your new toolbar – it’s a great way to make Vista or XP look like Windows 7. If you like it you can set it to start when Windows boots automatically; otherwise you can just close it and forget it.

ViStart: Vista-style Start Menu

Of course, the Windows 7 Toolbar isn’t the only feature Windows XP users might want. The Windows Vista Start Menu is an improvement over XP’s in several ways, and is basically unaltered in Windows 7.
ViStart is Lee-soft’s answer to this.

While it doesn’t replicate the look of the Vista/7 start menu perfectly, it does replicate what for me is the most logical feature: instant search of your programs.
Let me explain a little. I’m a Windows user by necessity, but a Linux user whenever possible. One of the things I’ve always loved about using Linux is the ability to press “Alt” and “F2″ to bring up a “launch” window, where I can type the command of the program I want to run.
The Windows Vista start menu essentially gives me this in Windows. I press the Windows button, then I start typing the name of the program I want to run. As soon as I see it at the top of the list I can hit “enter” to launch it. This is a lot faster than fumbling with the mouse once you get used to it.
ViStart does this perfectly in Windows XP, and for this reason I’ve taken to using it in the last couple of days.

ViSplore: Vista-style File Manager

This one’s the most gimmicky of all, in my opinion. You can replace the Windows Explorer file manager with one that resembles the Vista/7 file manager, complete with Aero effects. Since the rest of your system theme doesn’t match the Aero look, however, this mostly just looks out of place.

ViOrb: Vista-style Start Button

Finally, if the only feature from Windows Vista/7 you want in Windows XP is the slick, word-less Start-button-replacement known as the Vista Start Orb, give ViOrb a chance. While ViGlance and ViStart already replace the Start button with the Orb by default, ViOrb is perfect if you’re not interested in the Windows 7 toolbar or the Vista/7 start menu but do want to save some space on your taskbar.

Warning About Stacking

Though you wouldn’t expect it from such similar software all coming from one developer, these programs do not stack very well. On my computer trying to run ViStart, ViOrb and ViGlance all at once resulted in having 3 competing start buttons stacked on top of each other. My advice is to simply pick the features you find most compelling rather than run all three at once.

Conclusion

Lee-soft offers a few good programs that replicate some of the nicer features of Vista/7. While few would argue these tweaks are a wholesale replacement for an upgrade to Windows 7, they do bring some of 7′s nicer features to XP users today. If you can’t afford the expensive retail upgrade, and don’t plan on buying a new computer anytime soon, they are certainly worth checking out – if imperfect in some ways.

Make Firefox load faster

Wonderful as the Firefox web browser is, it is certainly not the fastest to start nor the fastest to load pages. After a quick spot of googling I found a discussion forum explaining how to get sites to open faster as well as how to make Firefox load faster.
Here are the steps you’ll need to take
1. Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit "enter"
2. Search for network.http.pipelining, if it is set to false, double click it and will toggle to true
3. Clear the search, and search this time for network.http.proxy.pipelining, double click to set to true
4. Clear and search for network.http.pipelining.maxrequests, double click and change the value from its default (usually 4) to 30, this makes Firefox make more requests to sites you visit
5. Now, copy this phrase to your clipboard, nglayout.initialpaint.delay and right click anywhere in the about:config page. Create a new “integer” and paste the phrase nglayout.initialpaint.delay. Now, set its value to 0, to speed up browser response.
According to forum member dudeinAmerica, if you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages much faster now.
Alternatively, and described as simpler and more effective is Fasterfox.
Next, you should download a program to make Firefox load faster. You can find the Firefox Preloader here. You’re mileage will vary, but if you’ve been getting frustrated by a slow Firefox, this will lift its foxy brush and stick a rocket up its ass.
Here’s an additional tip for reducing Firefox’s enormous RAM overhead. Open about:config again and search for browser.cache.disk.capacity, double click and change the default 50000 to 15000 if you have between 512Mb and 1Gb of RAM.
Also, if you want to release RAM when you minimize FF, go to about:config. Right click an empty space, and create a new Boolean, call it config.trim_on_minimize, and set its value to TRUE.
Restart Firefox and feel the effects.

NetOp 9.0 Installation (must do it) - Installshield based

Well, here I go again. I have to fix it and solve it today.

Standard approach:

download uk.exe from the updates section (netop.com)
start uk.exe and select advanced then save installation files (c:\@netop\setup -> %setupfolder%), deselect windows installer files and then select only host modules.
download deployment utility (full version), install it
start ndu and click on configure in the Section “2″, template area
Configure all settings that are necessary including security settings.
This will generate a setup.iss in %programfiles%\netop deployment utility\media
Copy this file to %setupfolder%
install using setup.exe -s -SMS from %setupfolder%

The installation stops running hosts and installs the application. That’s what I wanted because the uninstalling of the old version usually runs perfectly well when using netop installshield setup.

After the installation I need to configure all additional settings by hand.

But first there I faced some issues already:

The installation did not require a reboot.

After installing the NetOp Host is running but the host windows is being displayed. That’s not what I’ve specified.
When Iexit the netop host it crashes ~8 times (nhstw32.exe)

Now, I reboot and lets see what happens:

Netop host runs iconized in the notification area.
Exiting the host does not show any crashes anymore.

We do need a reboot after installation of netop host.

Oops, the host crashed after exiting, like before the reboot. Not good.

Found out that the crash always happens when right clicking the host icon in the notification area and then selecting exit. If I restore the window, i.e. the host window is being shown, and then close it, it does not crash. (I am working on Windows XP sp2)

I finished configuring the netop host with the windows security groups G_IT_Netop_admins and G_IT_Netop_users.

I then tried to manipulate the installation by copying the old .ndb files over the old ones in the %allusersprofile%\Anwendungsdaten\danware data\Netop remote control\host folder

Does not work!!

On the machine I am working was an old version installed and it did have it’s configuration files in another folder %allusersprofile%\Anwendungsdaten\danware date\host\

It uses that path for storing the configuration files.

This is what netop admin guide has to say:

And here is how to change the default location of the files. Maybe I have to do this, or I’ll copy all config files to both possible locations.

I believe this to be my mistake!!!!!

I found out that the new installation installs itself in %programfiles%\danware data\host and that the old installation used the netop remote control folder before the host. I always do have trouble with the paths.

The old installation was not completely removed. All files and folders in %programfiles% and %allusersprofile% still exist. I’ll have to cleanup myself.

Remember: %programfiles%\danware data\host -> This is the correct folder for the new installation

Now I will package it with enteo. This is in another post

Create or find an image.
I found these eyes in a magazine article. Scanned in as bmp, sized and overlaid the eyes for a match. Where it didn't match, I cloned the first and pasted in on the second image. Saved as gif file. Cartoons are a lot easier. Images are everywhere. Offsetting, flipping and rotating images all give movement. Now let's animate.

Microsoft offers this as Freeware. Self extracting zip file 1.03 megabytes. Be patient, it's worth it and it's Free.
"Animation" Tab
1. Prepare the gif files you want to animate and store in one folder. This animation has two gif files or images.
2.Click Open File Icon 2nd from left, Find the first file you want and click OK. To add the 2nd file, click the + (plus) icon and find the 2nd file, Click OK and the file will insert in frame #1 and move the first choice to frame #2. If not in correct sequence, select the frame which shows a blue border around it after selection, click up arrow. One click of up arrow will move the frame up one and the replaced frame will move down one. I checked looping and inserted 4 for my repeated count before stopping. For continual looping, check "Repeat Forever". "Trailing Comment" is for copyright and creation notations. I duplicated first image in Frame #3 because when it stopped, I wanted the eye open and it stops on the last frame of the sequence.

Image" Tab Settings
1.Image is 165 pixels wide and 144 pixels tall.
2. They are all the same size so "Left" and top settings are "0" by default. Keeping this simple to begin with, I'll cover smaller image settings in later lesson and reason for smaller images.
3. Frame #2 is selected and inserted duration at 50, which is 1/2 of a second. 100 is one second. Frame #1 was set at 200 and Frame #3 was set at 100.
4. "Transparency is not selected, so I don't have to select a transparent color. Cover this in later lesson.
5. I'm ready to preview and see if my settings are what I want. If not, stop the preview and go back and select the frames you want to change the settings to make faster or slower. To Preview, Click diamond button pointing to the right to run animation.
6. Save grouping by Clicking multiple save icon, 5th from left button. The animation is now package as one gif file, ready to run in Stationary or html document when installed.
Note: This was designed to go on a white background for seamless viewing as the image background is not transparent and is white.

View of finished animated eye. Copy, Save and open in MS Gif Animator, Review and change the settings and then preview to see the effects of the settings.
You can edit any animated gif file you find on the web as well in the same manner.
Respect copyrighted material. This image is set to run forever so you can see the effects of the animation. I wanted a flirtatious wink not a blink. Did I succeed?

Practice: Copy, Save my animated gif example. Open it with MS Gif Animator to see the construction and settings and then insert it on your email stationary.
This program is limited to gif format picture images. There are animators for other images like jpg and bmp but they want about $49 for their program. The key is the quality of your paint program saving a gif file, not the animator program. If you have the money, buy a better paint program like Adobe Photoshop.

Anda pernah merasakan Blackberry yang terkunci? Status di BIS-nya Suspend? Bisa mengakses Blackberry Messenger (BBM), internet, YM, Maps, GPS, dll, tapi tidak dapat membuka email atau menerima email?

Kalau Blackberry itu selalu di tangan Anda (bukan baru beli BB second) hal tersebut (biasanya) disebabkan oleh penggantian kartu SIM Card (ganti provider), atau telat memperpanjang layanan BIS (Blackberry Internet Services) untuk yang pakai kartu Prabayar.
Kalau Blackberry tersebut baru Anda dapat karena beli BB second dan akses mailnya terkunci. Hal tersebut biasanya dikarenakan karena pemilik BB lama tidak mengeluarkan status PIN-nya dari situs Blackberry.
Cara membuka Blackberry yang terkunci tersebut mudah saja. Anda tidak perlu repot-repot mengantri di customer service atau menelpon layanan pelanggan yang sampe botak juga tidak menyelesaikan masalah (gw nyoba sendiri 'capeknya' nelpon layanan pelanggan Telkomsel) .

Lalu aktifkan fasilitas Blackberry Internet Services (BIS) kartu baru tersebut DARI HP NON BLACKBERRY.
Contohnya; pada kartu Axis, Layanan BIS Axis tersebut saya aktifkan dengan mengetikkan: *222# lalu tekan tombol Call.
Tunggu konfirmasi dari Axis, sampai layanan BIS di kartu baru tersebut sudah diaktifkan.
Sambil menunggu, gunakan komputer Anda, lalu kunjungi situs dimana Blackberry Anda terdaftar saat ini atau sebelumnya.
Contohnya; jika kartu saat ini Telkomsel, Anda bisa menuju ke http://telkomsel.blackberry.com
Pada tampilan Login Screen "Welcome To Blackberry" ;
Klik Forgot Password disamping kolom Password.
Hal tersebut membawa Anda ke halaman baru "Forgot Your Password?",
lalu Pilih opsi PIN, Isikan PIN Anda dan Klik Forgot Password disamping kolom Password.
Tunggu sampai password baru terkirim ke Blackberry Anda.
Jika pesan dari Blackberry telah diterima, CATAT informasi email address dan password Anda disana.
Setelah Password diterima, kembali ke Blackberry Anda. Lalu matikan layanan Blackberry Internet Services (BIS) Anda.Contoh: Di kartu Telkomsel saya kirim SMS ke nomor 333 dan ketik: BB UNREG
Setelah Anda mendapat pesan layanan BIS Anda telah dihentikan, lalu ketikkan SMS dengan pesan; BB OFF
Pada saat ini, status Blackberry Anda tidak bertuan, alias tidak terdaftar kemana-mana. Tunggu kira-kira sekitar 10 menit untuk memastikan layanan BIS Anda di Blackberry Anda sudah benar-benar mati total.
Jika sudah, keluarkan SIM Card lama dan masukan SIM Card baru yang telah memiliki layanan BIS aktif yang dijelaskan pada keterangan nomor 7 diatas ke dalam Blackberry Anda.
Tunggu sekitar 5 sampai 15 menit (tergantung kondisi jaringan), Blackberry Anda akan menerima beragam pesan aktivasi (dalam contoh ini pesan dikirimkan oleh Axis).
Blackberry Anda siap menerima email kembali..

Zeus.zbot.aoaq,The Zeus banking trojan is also known as Zbot, WSNPOEM, NTOS and PRG. It steals credentials for various online services like social networks, online banking accounts, ftp and email accounts. It spreads via email and Drive-by-Downloads.

what to look for in a PC that may reveal a Zeus infection:

* The ZEUS trojan will commonly use names like NTOS.EXE, LD08.EXE, LD12.EXE, PP06.EXE, PP08.EXE, LDnn.EXE and PPnn.EXE etc, so search your PCs for files with names like this. The ZEUS Trojan will typically be between 40KBytes and 150Kbytes in size.

* Also look for a folder with the name WSNPOEM, this is also a common sign of infection for the ZEUS Trojan.
* Finally, check the Registry lloking for RUN keys referencing any of these names.
